1. Arteries are blocked due to build-up of plaque which is an outcome of chronic inflammation caused by AGEs (Advanced Glycation End Products). The most common AGE formation in arteries is due to small dense LDL particles. The inflammation is caused due to AGE – RAGE (Receptors of AGE) interaction at the epithelial cells of artery walls which leads to formation of foam cells due to immune response from macrophages and calcification of these foam cells overtime.
2. There’s practically no pain (Angina) experienced till the blockage in the coronary artery is > 70%. Hence, it is nearly impossible to diagnose a person with blocked artery unless specific tests are carried out.
3. Say, even if the plaque is 30% and is only partially blocking the coronary artery which means that there will be no Angina pain experienced, there are chances that the plaque in the coronary artery may rupture leading to thrombosis (blood clot being formed) which may eventually block the complete artery.
